Fishing!!!! It’s one of my favorite past times that I hardly ever do.
I grew up fishing with my dad and I loved it. When he would take us it would always be a big deal. We would pack for the day, get to the lake, set up all of our stuff, and wait for the end of our pole to bend. That meant we were “getting a bite”. When I was little I would immediately reel in my line whenever my pole would move. Thus, I hardly ever caught anything. Now, that I am an older and a much wiser fisherwoman (ha!) I wait for the fish to bite and then take the bait before reeling in my line. I have caught way more fish this way!
Oddly enough, catching a fish isn’t my favorite part of fishing. I love the waiting because while I wait, I watch. I watch the birds, the wind blow through the trees, the water, and I listen to all the different sounds nature has to offer. I allow my mind to just breathe, take in all of God’s beauty, and rest. If I happen to catch a fish, great. If I spend all day enjoying nature without a single bite, then that’s o.k. too.
This day I happened to be at the river by myself. As I was sitting and waiting I noticed how quiet it was. There was movement all around me, but it was so quiet. It was a challenge to sit in so much quiet. In a world where there is always some kind of noise echoing in our ears, I found it really hard to be still. I kept wanting to look at my phone or get up and move spots. It made me wonder how long a person could sit still in this day and age. I normally would be able to, but I am kinda in a season of waiting. Maybe that’s why it was so hard, cause I am tired of it, haha! Whatever the reason, it was an interesting moment forcing myself to relax in the silence of nature.
I have decided, this year, I am going to do more fishing. I want to get back doing what I love and becoming comfortable being still again.
What is something you love that you haven’t done in a while? I encourage you to make more time for those things. Life is shorter than we think and it is so important to remember to take time and enjoy it, too.
